Seed Implant

Seed Implant

At the time of your volume study, you will receive written pre-procedure instructions. You will also receive a phone call a few days before the seed implant to review these written instructions. Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions regarding the pre-procedure instructions.

On the day of the procedure, someone will need to accompany you to Chicago Prostate Center, listen to the discharge instructions and remain with you for 24 hours after the procedure.

You will be at Chicago Prostate Center for approximately four (4) hours. The seed implantation takes approximately 45-60 minutes. This is followed by one to two hours of recovery time.

Upon arrival, you will be escorted to the pre-operative area. A nurse will welcome you and review your current health status and medications. You will need to sign a consent form for the procedure. The anesthesiologist will review your health history and explain the type of anesthesia used during the procedure.

In the treatment room, monitoring devices will be applied, and the anesthesiologist will administer the appropriate anesthetic. Once the radiation oncologist implants the seeds, the urologist may perform a cystoscopy. A cystoscopy allows the urologist to look inside the urethra and bladder.

When your implant is finished, the anesthesiologist will awaken you, and you will be taken to the recovery room. An ice pack will be applied to the perineum (the area behind your scrotum) to minimize discomfort and swelling. When you are fully awake, you will be given liquids to drink and a snack to eat. Your family will be able to join you at this time.

Before discharge from the recovery area, you will receive:

  • Post-implant guidelines including activity restrictions
  • Radiation safety information
  • Prescriptions for medications
